Mentorship

My name is Jan Urschel and I am a professional concept designer, art director and consultant. I've worked with industry leading clients on numerous projects including Hollywood movies, AAA games, TV shows, commercials and even architecture (for a more detailed breakdown please see the about page).

My tools are 3D modelling and painting, but I am more of a designer than an illustrator. The focus for my classes is not to teach you how to become a better 3D artist or painter. But rather I want teach you how to become a better designer and thinker. Demos will be done mostly in Blender and a 2D software package like Adobe Photoshop. Which tool or medium you use does not matter. What matters is what you are trying to say and express with the tools. What matters is your voice and what your goals are.

I have taught thousands of professional artists over the past 14 years through teaching full terms and masterclasses at art schools, in-house training at renowned studios like Lucasfilm, speaking engagements at art events around the globe, online workshops and tutorials. Regardless of where you're at in your career, whether you're starting out, you're feeling stuck or looking to advance your skills, I can guide you in the right direction.

Testimonials

🔥
"Jan is one of the best mentors I've ever had in my life. I decided to take the mentorship in a moment of my life when I had to reconnect with my personal art and find again the joy of making concepts for myself. This path with him was not only particularly successful but also refueled my artistic life and drive with that spark I cherished so much. "

"From my experiences, this mentorship program was a great occasion to learn/ to grow, in particular to identify my weaknesses. During the class, the mentor could look not only at my strengths, but also guide me on how to define my weaknesses, and guided me to overcome them through a personal project."

"Jan has an incredible ability to cut through the noise and give clear, actionable feedback that immediately elevates your concept work. Working 1-on-1 with Jan felt like getting real studio-level direction—focused, honest, and incredibly valuable. Jan didn’t just help improve my artwork; he helped reshape how I think about design, storytelling, and problem-solving as a concept artist. "

Class structure

This is a customised one-on-one online private lesson. Each term is 4 weeks. You will have access to a weekly online chat with me for homework review, check-in and Q&A (approx. 1 hour session). It doesn't matter in which timezone you live as meeting times are arranged to accommodate both our schedules. My time for private teaching is extremely limited so I will need to review your portfolio before accepting your application. Materials are specific to your learning objectives and based on my assessment of your current skills.

Who is this for

For students and professionals who prefer a direct and tailored experience rather than group classes. Some of you might have taken group lessons before but it wasn't as effective as you'd hoped. You need deeper insight into your areas of improvement and have found my way of teaching useful in the past. If you fall into any of these categories then this mentorship is for you.

If you wish to apply, please fill out the form below and I will reach out to you with more info. Submitting the form for review does not commit you to join the program nor does it guarantee your acceptance into my mentorship.
